scones

20150720_094201 20150720_085118

This morning my little and I made scones with some blueberries we bought at the farmers market and some raspberries we picked from the garden. these scones were so easy to make and they taste great! I used a recipe from my favorite cooking blog smitten kitchen ( http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2015/07/very-blueberry-scones/). These were so simple that the 3 year old did most of the work and they came together in less than 10 minutes. I did make a few changes to the recipe to make use of what we had. first I added raspberries from the garden and I also replaced the wheat flour with oat since I am out of whole wheat.

Yard Two in April

Yard two is actually my mother’s yard while she has a lovely vegetable garden, she has had dogs and little time for many years so this yard has a lot of blank dead space and plants far past their prime. The things I am looking forward to are, a large mulberry tree, a sunny deck for pots and my green house now lives in this yard. We soon will be staying in my mother’s house while they are in another country for work so this will be my main garden.

this yard has lots of potential and is already showing life. I can’t wait to see what it has to offer.

First Harvest of the Season.

20150404_102348

This morning I walked out into my yard for the fist real harvest of the season. I pulled 5 stalks of ruhbarb to make strawberry ruhbarb oatmeal for breakfast! 20150404_102423

I started this ruhbarb from seed 2 years ago and this is my first year of really getting to harvest it. I spent $3.85 on the pack of seeds from John scheepers ( https://www.kitchengardenseeds.com/cgi-bin/catview.cgi?_fn=Product&_category=112 )

My Scrap Blanket

I started this blanket a few months ago and it will take me years to finish.  The blanket is made with all the odd and end yarn left after projects are done. I am extremely excited about this project as it satisfies my desire to not waste anything but also my desire for a deeper connection to the world and my friends and family.

for better germination rate on beans in peas don’t forget the chit them. Chitting is very simple,  all you need to do is count out your seeds to be planted then soak them in water for 12 to 24 hous. Rehydrating the seed will give you less spotty germination.

welcoming spring to garden 1

20150307_122740spring has sprung out in the garden! This is the first of 3 gardens I will be managing th is year. I will also be privileged to help out in a community garden as well as a few of my friends gardens. 20150307_122751So far I am still working on cleaning up the garden a warming the soil in a few of the beds, but I have been able to plant a few things. I have planted round one of peas and Fava beans, a few more strawberries that were gifted to me, lettuce,  beets, spinach and kohlrabi that will all be sewn a few more times in the first few weeks of april. This garden is more alive at this point than it has ever been in march. My herbs and perrenials  are coming back to life but I also have parsley, swiss chard, lettuce, spinach and an onion that all some how made it through some very cold weather.20150307_122856

we are so happy it is spring and can’t wait for the garden to come.

Tip Tuesday

Cut up a bar of soap to use at the gym.

My family recently joined the ymca. The kids adore swimming but I hate sending  an entire bar of soap with my 7 year old into the locker room. We were losing soap and I know he would drop it so that it would gather all the yucky floor germs. Now I just cut up a bar and add a little chunk to a zip lock, and go. When we get home I open the zip lock and let the soap dry for another use. These generally give us 2 or 3 trips to the gym. Each bar of soap can easily be cut up into 12 or so chuncks

Let the kids get into you crafting supplies from time to time. This sweet pile of monsters is the result of me saying yes. My seven year old made all of his and my 3 year old helped me make his. They had fun and got some time with mama. All it cost me was a bit of my yarn and the googly eyes that we got at a dollar  store.
